Chantix May Help Heavy Drinkers Cut Down

A drug used to help people stop smoking may also help heavy drinkers cut back the amount they drink, thereby reducing their harmful level of alcohol consumption. A study of the drug varenicline, marketed as Chantix, significantly reduced the level of consumption by a group of heavy-drinking smokers, who were seeking treatment for smoking, not for alcohol.

Teen Prescription Drug Use Unchanged

The latest research indicates that teen abuse of prescription and over-the-counter medication has not increased, but seems to be leveling off. Unfortunately, that is not necessarily good news with 17% of high school students admitting to abuse of prescription drugs in their lifetimes.

'Heavy' Marijuana Use by Teens Surges

The 23rd Partnership Attitude Tracking Study (PATS) is out and it's not good news for parents who hope their children make it through high school without doing drugs. The latest survey indicates that smoking weed is becoming more acceptable behavior among teens and heavy marijuana use is now at disturbingly high levels.

Safety Warning Issued for Pain Patches

Pain patients who use prescription pain patches and also have small children in the home need to take special precautions to prevent possible illness and death. As a result of reports of children becoming seriously ill or dying from accidental exposure to skin patches containing the pain reliever fentanyl, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a safety alert. Most of the accidental exposures have involved children less than two years old.

The FDA alert warns patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals about the proper storage and disposal of fentanyl patches. ...
